NFL Draft Overview – Day 3; Michael Sam Makes History

The NFL Draft has now been completed, & teams took care of needs. The Cincinnati Bengals got a backup quarterback who could be a starter one day in former Alabama player A.J. McCarron. The Kansas City Chiefs got some potential help in former Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray.

But none of those picks that will most likely directly help a team will be noticed. One pick that everyone is talking about is the St. Louis Rams selecting Michael Sam in the 7th round. Sam, of course, is the first openly gay NFL player in history. While that alone has already been a hot topic of discussion, the way that it was presented on the ESPN broadcast has people very much annoyed, angried all the way to celebratory.

This needs to be celebrated for what it is – a landmark moment in the history of America in terms of culture & in terms of acceptance. Although, to be honest, the cake & kiss was a bit much right now only because as a whole, America is not ready to see that or discuss that on a national TV show like the NFL Draft. But I do believe that at some point, it won’t be a big deal.

Sports is the one area that people have a ways to go before there is full acceptance of everyone across the board because of sexual preferences due to the belief that to be an athlete, there is a sense of masculinity & toughness to you. But I ask, how is having Michael Sam in the NFL any different than lesbians in college athletics & the WNBA? Many people almost assume & expect that half of the female athletes that are playing sports are lesbian, bisexual or transgender, so why is Michael Sam any different?

Because its the one thing that touches at the heart of what straight men actually squirm about – the idea of two men kissing. As it becomes more accepted & its presented more in front of us, men will become more laid back about it. I had no problem with it, I think that equality is important across the board & we need to bury discrimination all the way, if not for this generation, then our children’s generation.

ESPN shows Viagra commercials on repeat that promote sexual enhancement for men, what does that say? After the game, you & your partner can go & have great sex after your team wins. Plain & simple. This was outward emotion & America, at some point, will have some maturity about this issue.

Although, in a way, this is great that this happened right now. Now we can focus on Sam’s football ability & his chances of making the Rams actual roster. Even though he was the 2013 SEC Defensive Player of the Year at Missouri, he had a poor senior, poor NFL Scouting Combine & just overall hasn’t been impressive in many workouts. But it’s apparent that he is a big time playmaker.

Michael Sam from the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine. Sam was drafted Saturday in the 7th round of the NFL Draft.

This may be the only story in sports that overshadowed the big story in the NFL Draft, which is Johnny Manziel going to the Cleveland Browns, & not having his biggest target to possibly not throw to this season in Josh Gordon. This coming season will be very different in the NFL for many reasons. The attention won’t always be on the usual suspects (Manning, Brady, Sherman, Kaepernick) but on young rookies who will be proving themselves for completely different reasons.

Manziel because he is a showman. Sam because he’s gay. Jadeveon Clowney because of the hype. Blake Bortles because of the skills & the hot girlfriend. Eric Ebron because of where he was picked in the draft for the Detroit Lions.

As usual, the NFL has us all ready for the next season right now. Enjoy the best reality show on television.
