A report came out today stating what many NBA fans already knew – that Minnesota Timberwolves F Kevin Love will not be resigning with the Minnesota Timberwolves after next season & will most likely opt to become a free agent in the offseason. So, of course, Minnesota is going to work to make a deal for him this offseason & during the 2014-15 NBA season.
Love has been one of the most dominant players in the NBA, almost gaining a double-double every night. He is definitely a 20 point, 10 rebound guy who can shoot the 3-pointer as a near 7-footer – skills that you can’t just find anywhere. You either have it or you don’t. Flat out.
Love has been dissatisfied playing in Minnesota, not only because the team hasn’t put a lot of great talent around him in his years in the league, but because he doesn’t get the opportunities that many other top players receive who play in major media markets in the country. Many players are not clamoring to play in Minnesota most years & its because its cold & there isn’t much going on in Minnesota for most players on a regular basis in terms of fun night life & entertainment opportunities to expand their brand.
If the Timberwolves truly allow Kevin Love to become a free agent, here are a few places that the team could deal him to or he could go & fit in as a free agent –
Los Angeles Lakers
This is probably the easiest fit for Love in terms of his lifestyle & what he enjoys doing outside of basketball. His girlfriend lives in L.A. & Love is starting to get more entertainment roles in Hollywood, & those roles & opportunities would start to roll in for him by playing closer to Los Angeles. Plus, he is a product of UCLA so he is already familiar with the southern California scene.
In terms of basketball, Love would be a great fit there, especially if Pau Gasol leaves or signs a one-year deal. Love would be a great compliment to Kobe Bryant & if Bryant isn’t fully ready or back to being himself, the organization can build around Love & with the ability to bring in more players in the summer such as LeBron James or Carmelo Anthony, the Lakers instantly become a contender to the NBA Championship.
Los Angeles Clippers
This is more of a long shot, especially with all of the issues taking place with the NBA & Donald Sterling, but the Clippers could put together a strong lineup in a deal for either Blake Griffin or Deandre Jordan.
My guess would be Jordan & a first-round draft pick because Love brings in extra offensive firepower for Chris Paul & Blake Griffin. It would also make Griffin more dangers as a 4 & Love can play the power forward, small forward or center positions & be a nightmare for all big men defenders in the league. With CP3 dishing the ball all over the court, Love could take his game to incredible heights.
If Love were to go there as just a free agent, the Clippers could roll the dice, sign Love & basically go for the NBA Championship right now. A signing like that for the franchise would give the team & the fans a whole new light on the team, which has gained so much negative publicity the last few weeks because of Sterling & the NBA ownership issues. Having Jordan, Love, Paul & Griffin makes for an ultimate squad that would dominate the city of Los Angeles even further & make the Clippers fans know that its either NBA championship or nothing.
No matter what happens, it seems as though Love is definitely playing his last season in Minnesota & is going to be LA bound – but the main question will be which part of Staples Center will he be in?
