When you are hot, you are hot. Cameron Maybin may be the hottest player in all of Major League Baseball. Maybin went 3-4 today with a home run & helped out Michael Fulmer, who had a dominant pitching performance, in a 5-4 win against Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday. The Tigers will look for the series win on Sunday afternoon.
Maybin has been absolutely on a tear since coming off of the disabled list, going 12-17 since returning to the lineup. He has made it very difficult to come out of the lineup right now & will make now backup CF Anthony Gose really have to work to get his spot back.
J.D. Martinez kept on rockin with another home run today, making 5 in his last 7 games. Even though he didn’t have a hit, Miguel Cabrera drove the ball so well to all fields today & if the conditions were a bit better, could have actually had 3 homeruns today, but as with most hitters at Comerica Park, if you hit to the wrong areas of the park, a homerun in many other parks around baseball is simply a flyout at Comerica.
Going back to Fulmer, though, he was dominant on the mound on Saturday, striking out 11 against a team in Tampa Bay that is very aggressive when it comes to swinging the bat & can definitely hit a ton of home runs when they need to. Fulmer kept the Rays completely off balance most of the night, until Evan Longoria hit a solo HR in the 6th to tie the game.
Catcher James McCann hit a two-run homer after Maybin got his third hit of the day, a single to right field, to make it 3-1. Martinez added the two-run homer in the 7th to make it 5-1. Tampa Bay came back to make the game 5-4, off of reliever Justin Wilson. Closer Francisco Rodriguez allowed a walk in the 9th before shutting down the Rays with three straight outs to close the victory.
The Tigers continue to look incredibly relaxed at the plate. They seem to be seeing the ball much clearer & are locked in big time, hitting the ball to all fields with great power and the team, as a whole, is being aggressive on the basepads. Against the Rays today, even with the umpiring being a bit inconsistent, the Tigers stayed patient at the plate & their home runs were off Drew Smyly pitches that were pretty much right down the heart of the plate.
Along with today’s win, Tigers fans had the joy of hearing Hall of Fame Broadcaster & current San Diego Padres lead announcer Dick Enberg call the game today, replacing normal Fox Sports Detroit broadcaster Mario Impemba, who had the day off. Enberg & color analyst & former Tiger Kirk Gibson were enjoyable talking about the history of baseball & some of his favorite moments as an announcer, along with how he came up in baseball as a young kid from Armada, Michigan.
Thank you Dick Enberg, from all of us at DraftKingsMaster, the city of Detroit, the state of Michigan & Tigers fans worldwide.
