To say the Detroit Tigers offense is hot right now might be a bit of an understatement. The Tigers took care of the Phillies last night, 5-4 down at Comerica Park. The team has had an amazing homestand so far, only having lost two games during the time at home.
Miguel Cabrera launched two home runs out of the park, and J.D. Martinez hit his team-leading 10th of the season as well as Nick Castellanos hitting his 9th of the year to help out Mike Pelfrey, who didn’t look his best, as he gave up four earned runs on two home runs. Pelfrey has been supported by strong offense in his starts, but if he is going to be the fifth starter in the lineup, he has to be able to win some more 2-1 or 3-2 games down the line.
The Tigers announced before the game that the team will skip Jordan Zimmermann’s next start to take care of his strained groin. Ian Kinsler also had his 10-game hitting streak snapped on Monday night.
The starters tonight are our ace Justin Verlander (3-4, 4.58 ERA) vs Jeremy Hellickson (4-2, 3.99 ERA) so a strong pitching matchup to say the least. With a win tonight, the Tigers go back above .500 for the first time in a month.
