2017 New England Patriots DraftKings NFL Preview

Tom Brady New England Patriots DraftKings

The defending SuperBowl champion New England Patriots don’t need much hype going into 2017. Everyone knows Brady. They know the offense is amazing. Coaching was always stellar. Blah Blah Blah. Here’s the scary part – the Patriots became better during the offseason. It can be said that the 2017 squad could be light years better than last year’s championship team. DraftKings players – have a feast. It could get scary for the league.

New England Patriots DraftKings DFS Opportunities – Tom Brady

Tom Brady was & is the greatest QB in NFL history. No debate about that. At 40 years old, Brady showed no signs of slowing down last season & still doesn’t. The one area were Brady looked to be a mere mortal was during the Houston Texans in the AFC Divisional Round. Patriots won the game, but the Texans got a ton of pressure on Tom, especially up the middle & around the edges. Elite rushers such as Jadeveon Clowney were able to rattle Brady throughout the game.

In the SuperBowl, the Atlanta Falcons were able to get that same pressure, leading to the Falcons having a 28-3 lead. Again, before Brady put his Superman cape on.

To take care of the possible worries, the Patriots brought in fullbacks Glenn Gronkowski (Rob’s brother) in from Buffalo along with James Develin. The fullbacks will give Brady more protection in the backfield, leading to more time to throw. If Brady has even an extra second to throw, he will be the deadliest QB in all of DraftKings daily fantasy football.

More Deep Threats Help Tom Brady DraftKings Owners In Points

During the SuperBowl runs in New England, Brady has had only one top off the defense receiver – Randy Moss. The other receivers have been great route runners & good possesson receivers who Brady made great. The Patriots helped Brady big time by signing Brandin Cooks from the Saints. Cooks is a receiver who can go deep & make big plays consistently. Cooks played with one of the best deep ball throwers in the game in Drew Brees for several years.

Look for Tom Terrific to average around 30-35 DK points every game. Play in cash & tournament games.

New England Patriots DraftKings DFS Opportunities – Running Back

This part of the Patriots offense may give some doubt to DraftKings owners. The Patriots lost their big time rusher, LeGarrette Blount, to the Philadelphia Eagles in free agency. Blount had 1181 yards & 18 touchdowns last season. He was a true balance for the Patriots, allowing the passing game to take shots down field on big plays. The linebackers & secondary had to play closer to the line of scrimmage & load the box. Doing that opens routes for Edelman, Amendola, Hogan & Gronk to break free downfield.

The Patriots decided to replace Blount with a volume of backs. Most will probably not make the final roster, but Dion Lewis, James White, Brandon Bolden & Rex Burkhead should get opportunity to prove their skills. White & Lewis are proven commodities for the Patriots – especially White, who scored the game-winning touchdown in the SuperBowl in overtime.

In terms of carries, look for White & Lewis to get the majority. Both players can also catch out of the backfield, making both good tournament plays. Brady loves to move the ball around to a variety of targets & running backs are targeted well. Rex Burkhead & Glenn Gronkowski could be players to look at for goal line situations, leading to easy touchdowns.

Playing any of the Patriots running backs in DraftKings DFS could be risky. The Patriots’ offense changes game to game, with the only constant is passing opportunities for Brady.

New England Patriots DraftKings Opportunities – Wide Receivers

In the Patriots’ SuperBowl wins, analysts said that Brady won without great receivers around him. This season, that will change. The Patriots have four receivers that can do damage downfield this year.

Chris Hogan proved to be a reliable deep threat for Brady all year. Hogan had 38 receptions for 680 yards & 4 touchdowns. He averaged almost 18 yards a catch, with 11 plays over 20 yards.

A player who makes Hogan even more dangerous is Brandin Cooks. Cooks was traded to the Patriots early in the offseason, giving the team another strong deep threat. Cooks had a big year with the Saints, even though he was unhappy with his position here. He was targeted 117 times, made 78 receptions for 1,117 yards with 8 touchdowns.

Cooks was targeted quite frequently by Drew Brees, who was forced to throw much more with the Saints being behind much more. The Patriots will spread the ball around so Cooks’ numbers may suffer, but will make him more effective overall. The Patriots’ offense will put all receivers in position to score often.

Julian Edelman & Danny Amendola Key for DraftKings Fantasy Owners

Julian Edelman & Danny Amendola will once again be major factors for the Patriots. Amendola dealt with injuries all season, thus limiting him to only 23 receptions. Edelman was a workhorse all season long. He had 98 receptions on 158 targets for 1106 yards, yet only three touchdowns.

The touchdowns were lower due to the running component of the Patriots offense. With Blount off the team & the Patriots haven’t identified a true #1 back, wide receivers will have more scoring opportunities across the board.

Edelman & Amendola will have more opportunities to make plays in the middle of the field with more outside targets. DraftKings owners love the consistency of both players in ownership & that shoudn’t change in 2017.

DraftKings owners should expect 15-18 points per game from Patriots receivers in any given game. Brady will rely more on the passing game this year, going back to the high flying style. More Brady throws, more DraftKings points.

Healthy Rob Gronkowski Always A Great Play in DraftKings

No doubt about it – Rob Gronkowski is the most dangerous tight end in the NFL. Gronk is too big for a safety or corner to cover. He is too fast for linebackers to stay with. When healthy, the Patriots are absolutely unstoppable. Gronk missed the SuperBowl & various points of the season with a back injury last year. The big man looks ready to show his dominance again. More deep threats will mean more single coverage for Gronk to run wild.

Look for Gronk to have another big year, if healthy, and a guy who if in the starting lineup, will be good for at least 1 touchdown every game.

Overall

The Patriots have another stacked lineup in 2017. DraftKings fantasy owners should feel good about owning Patriots players in stacks, especially Brady/Gronkowski positions. Gronk in a flex spot should be great for most lineups in tournaments or cash games.
